"A faint hint of reduction on the bouquet, but nonetheless with complex spice, leaf and berry aromas; the palate throws off the uncertainty of the bouquet with a velvety array of black fruits, licorice and spice; oak and tannins balanced."

Big, ultra-ripe style; some prune jam characters, but plenty happening.

Medium red-purple; a complex bouquet with spice and black fruits together with slightly tangy overtones, probably deriving from the French oak in which the wine spent 18 months. The palate has good structure, with fine tannins running through its length, giving savoury/briary touches to a wine designed from the ground up to go with food.

Winemaker's Comments

Made from 100% Shiraz this wine, sourced from low-cropping Barossa vineyards, spent 18 months in 50% American, 50% French oak 30% of which was new.  The superb quality and perfection of this Barossa icon is indicative of the intimate working relationship between winemaker and grower. Maximum flavour retention and complexity have been achieved through meticulous attention to detail with each individual process. The 2002 E&E Black Pepper Shiraz further reinforces the Barossa Valley Estate reputation of delivering world class Shiraz.

Ripe black fruits with obvious mocha/vanilla oak; full-bodied blackberry and sweet chocolate flavours; good texture and weight; round, ripe tannins. Cork. Enjoy this robust shiraz with strongly flavoured cheese or full-flavoured red meat dishes.

Reviews:

"The opaque purple-colored 2001 Shiraz Amery Vineyard Hillside (1,000 cases) possesses low acidity as well as extraordinary dense, chewy notes of blackberries, blueberries, melted licorice, creosote, smoke, and earth. Although it is not yet revealing many nuances, it is spectacularly concentrated, with fabulous flavor extraction, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. This monster should rival the 1998." - Robert Parker

Reviews:

"Tarry, chewy, and fleshy, the 2003 Shiraz Hillside has a bit more punch (15% alcohol) as well as a sappy character that is not present in the regular bottling. It is a broad, savory, expansively flavored, full-bodied Shiraz to enjoy over the next decade."- Robert Parker

"A cascade of black fruits and spices; medium-bodied but very long and intense; excellent tannin and oak management".

Named after a hill that rises above the Glenmorangie distillery, The Struie is the home of a pub called the Altman Arms. This is where David Powell first heard a band called Run Rig play! The Struie sources fruit from the high altitudes of Eden Valley imparting delicate spice, white pepper and fruit characters. While the Barossa component displays a richer, deeper, more brooding flavour and intensity. The combined structure will reward extended cellaring.

Winemaker's Comments

This is the best Coppermine Road we’ve made to date. This wine has a deep, dark, vibrant colour. The
nose shows intense blackcurrant and cranberry fruit, and subtle cedary cinnamon spice, barrel-ferment and oak derived aromas, violet and mint scents, as well as liquorice and chocolate smells. Intertwined is this wonderful green edge that lifts the wine into a cool climate spectrum which typifies the cold year. These aromas combine with some cassis, blueberry and cranberry, with lingering mocha and plumy fruit, and are just showing through amongst a long, intense, vibrant, gritty fruit tannin finish.
With bottle age, the wine will gain more complex characters of chocolate, truffle, cigar box and earth.
Varietal eucalyptus and bell pepper indicative of McLaren Vale may also come to the fore but are well integrated with the other developing characters, maintaining an even palate weight with a seamless and persistently rolling length. Phillip Dean & Chester Osborn - d'Arenberg Wine Makers.

Winemaker's Comments

2004 vintage conditions were quite warm and dry, giving rise to low yields of intensely flavoured fruit. Traditionally fermented on skins for 6 days, before maturation for up to 18 months in French and American oak barrels. Bottle aged prior to release and will continue to cellar beautifully for a further 10 years.

'Medium-bodied, but intense and long, with lovely definition to the black cherry and plum fruit, showing no hint of thickness or sweetness; fine tannins sustain the long finish. Cork.

'One of the best Barossa wines from this spectacularly hot vintage, with a dusty perfume of musky and exotically spiced cinnamon, cloves and white pepper over sweet cassis, blackberries and redcurrants. Fine-grained American oak is tightly honed and integrated. Long, vibrant and slightly minty, the palate offers a bright and refreshing expression of slightly jammy sweet berry fruits neatly wound around fine, bony tannins. Very impressive'. Jeremy Oliver
